Vancouver Park Board extending the season for two of its outdoor pools

Those looking to hang on to that summer feeling a little longer with a late-season swim in one of Vancouver’s outdoor pools will now have the opportunity to do so, the Vancouver Park Board (VPB) announced on Monday.

Citing “another record summer” as the reason for its decision, the VPB said that New Brighton Pool will remain open an extra five days through September 9, while the newly renovated Kits Pool will remain open through September 23.

In addition, other outdoor pools will remain open an extra day, closing after September 4. The VPB’s water parks will remain open until September 30.

“We know how much Vancouverites value their outdoor pools and beaches, and all things aquatic,” said VPB Chair Stuart MacKinnon. “We responded to the hot, dry summer by extending pool and water park hours and are now adding more swimming days to outdoor pools on both the east and west sides of the city.”

The extended season gives swimmers a full extra week to swim at the Kits Pool, which had a $3.3 million dollar renovation early this year. Upgrades included the removal and replacement of the pool basin membrane, repairs to the deck, and the addition of pumps to replenish and remove sea water. The improvements have greatly improved the water’s clarity.

The VPB said that Kits, New Brighton and Second Beach outdoor seaside pools have experienced another record year for visits. Since outdoor pools opened on the May long weekend this year, 272,642 people have visited — an increase of 10% over 2017.
