Neighbours is an exclusive Vancity Buzz feature in collaboration with award-winning photographer, Matthew Chen, celebrating the diverse individuals that make up our community, one story at a time.

Meet Ken Thorne, an avid adventurer and National Geographic-published travel photographer who works at the BC Cancer Agency here in Vancouver.

“Travelling around the world for a year taught me a lot about myself and the realization that the world is not this big, scary place that some people make it out to be. It struck me that once you strip away all of the cultural differences, basic human needs are pretty much the same no matter where you go.”

“I once read a quote that said, ‘Most people spend their lives avoiding the things that frighten us. Go toward those things.’ To this day, from my own experience, that concept has proven to be very powerful.”
