The report from Mercer, a company that provides data on global costs of living, bases their findings on factors that include inflation of goods and services, currency fluctuations, and instability of accommodation prices.

On a global scale, Vancouver ranks as the 142nd most expensive city, followed by Toronto at 143. Indeed, all Canadian cities have fallen in the rankings due to the weak dollar.

“While the cost of living continues to rise in Vancouver and Toronto for locals, the weak Canadian dollar has made these cities compelling for expatriates from organizations outside the country,” says Gordon Frost, Talent Leader for Mercer Canada. “However, the depressed dollar provides a challenge to Canadian organizations looking to place employees in cities around the world.”

Hong Kong tops the list as the world’s most expensive city, followed by Luanda, Zurich, Singapore, and Tokyo.

Here are the top 10 most expensive cities in the world:

  1. Hong Kong, Hong Kong
  2. Luanda, Angloa
  3. Zurich, Switzerland
  4. Singapore, Singapore
  5. Tokyo, Japan
  6. Kinhasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
  7. Shanghai, China
  8. Geneva, Switzerland
