5 things you didn't know about the upcoming YVR Airport expansion

Oct 12 2018, 5:02 am

Whether you’re a born and bred Vancouverite or a new arrival to the city, YVR International Airport is somewhere you spend a small part of the greatest moments of your life.

We’re talking about the excitement you feel before you set off travelling the world, the emotion as you fly out (or back) to see dear friends, and the feeling of serenity when you set your OOO email response to escape the city for new lands, even if just for a couple of days.

With passenger numbers at YVR expected to reach 31 million by 2022, the airport is moving forward with a $1.9 billion plan to build the airport of the future.

But there’s more than just the physical changes to YVR’s terminal expansion. Here’s why.

It will add new terminal perks

There’s nothing small or insignificant about YVR’s 20-year expansion and improvement project. The expansion includes 75 major projects that will bring a number of terminal enhancements, from more convenient parking to faster security screening.

It will create more jobs

The airport’s continued growth in passenger numbers and planned expansion will add to the 24,000+ jobs it already employs on Sea Island and more than 100,000 jobs indirectly created across BC.

It will support continued community investments

The anticipated growth of the airport will allow YVR to continue to reinvest its profits in local initiatives and donate to organizations like Covenant House, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Canucks Autism Network, and many more (which it already donates over $1 million per year to, btw).

It’s going to fuel economic growth

The 20-year expansion and improvement project will help YVR continue to fuel economic growth across BC. For example, the addition of just one daily year-round international flight leads to 107 new jobs and $8.3 million in GDP.

And the benefits all stay within British Columbia because…

The unique not-for-profit model of the Vancouver Airport Authority, which operates YVR, allows it to reinvest all profits back into improving the airport and supporting local communities – all without any government funding.
