Get your hiking legs ready, it’s time to tackle Mother Nature’s Stairmaster for another year. The Grouse Grind trail at Grouse Mountain will reopen for hiking this Saturday, April 30.

The trail is opening a whole week earlier than last year, but opening hours will be the same – from 6:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. These hours will be managed with a gate that is manually unlocked every day and locked every night.

During the fall months, the Grouse Grind will open and close earlier due to the shorter days.

Hikers are reminded that the Grouse Grind trail, a 853-metre vertical gain over a distance of 2.9-kilometres, is only to be used for ascents.

Descents are prohibited for safety reasons, due to the high number of hikers ascending the trail and the impact on the trail’s conditions, and can only be made using the Grouse Mountain aerial tram for a $10 fee.

About 150,000 people complete the trail every year; most hikers take an average of 90 minutes to complete the gruelling workout.

Although the Grouse Grind ends at Grouse Mountain Resort, the trail is maintained and operated by the Metro Vancouver Regional District.
