15 Vancouver food events worth checking out this October

Fall is the perfect time to celebrate food and drink and all things delicious in and around Vancouver. From wine fests and courses to the first-ever “dine-out” style event celebrating Chinese cuisine, and much more, there are a lot of great food-focused things happening in October.

Break out the lederhosen, it’s time for Oktoberfest, and Harvest Haus has quickly become one of Vancouver’s top draws. Over the course of two weekends, Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza will be transformed into the West Coast’s largest Germanic-inspired cultural harvest festival. Thisfully immersive atmosphere includes live music, and lots of beer, wine, and food, including Oktoberfest delicacies such as Spätzle, Brezen, Bratwürst, Schnitzel and Sauerkraut in the open-air Marktplatz (marketplace).

When: September 29 to October 1 and October 7 and 8 (times vary for seatings and events)

Sunday Series at YEW: Bouillabaisse

On Sunday, October 2, a limited number of guests will be able to enjoy Executive Chef Weimar Gomez’s first Sunday Series menu. The YEW culinary team is excited to showcase its take on a classic – Bouillabaisse. Guests will sit at a communal table, with a steaming pot of French inspired fish soup as the focal point.  Diners for this ticketed dinner can raise their glass of local bubbles and tuck into a bright, flavourful salad. Sop up the rich seafood stew with Executive Pastry Chef Mark Burton’s homemade crusty baguettes. End the night with Burton’s old-fashioned, brown sugar, warm apple pie with homemade ‘very vanilla’ ice cream.

Sip and Savour 2016

At this fundraiser food event, guests will have a chance to “sip and savour” from some of Vancouver’s top food and drinks from acclaimed restaurants like Hawksworth, The Mackenzie Room, Minami, The Acorn, TUC Craft Kitchen and more. A silent auction featuring more than 75 items will further entice and delight guests – all for an incredibly worthy cause: the BC Women’s Foundation.

EAT! Vancouver Food & Cooking Festival 2016

Vancouver’s favourite food fest is back, with an improved format, a worthy cause (Greater Vancouver Food Bank), and a focus on the best in local and national cooking and ingredients. A series of  special collaboration dinners, a food trends panel and tasting, a pastry workshop and tasting, an epicurean Harvest-themed gala, and an intimate Q&A with chef Michael Smith are all on the docket for this multi-day fest.

Now in its 12th year, Taste of Yaletown is back to offer diners a chance to get to know or revisit great neighbourhood restaurants. rom October 13th-27th, Yaletown kitchens will offer featured menus, special tastings and innovative pairings via fixed price menus of $25, $35 and $45 that move beyond three-course tasting menus.

Vancouver Urban Winery‘s Sunday School Sommelier Smackdown

Sunday School at the Vancouver Urban Winery – Vancouver’s wine school for the people – is back October 16 for the Sommelier Smackdown installation. The focus of Sunday School is on demystifying wine in an accessible and energetic environment. Set within the gorgeous Settlement Building attendees will get the opportunity to taste and learn about the wines being showcased.

Quinto Quatro at Campagnonlo ROMA

A very special meal, Quinto Quatro is held at Campagnolo ROMA only a few times per year in recognition of the important roman tradition of nose-to-tail cooking. This particular dinner will honor the unique cuts of meat known to Italian butchers at the fifth quarter (quinto quarto) alongside seasonal produce paired with beer from Brassneck.

Tasting Plates Yaletown

Tantalize your taste buds at several restaurants in the Yaletown neighborhood. This tasting extravaganza starts at 6 pm and is presented by Vancouver Foodster.

Colab@Latab #10

On October 24th Latab Food will host the next installment of a special monthly event that puts the focus on collaborations between some of Vancouver’s most innovative chefs, bartenders, and wild harvesters. Hosted by the restaurant’s chef and co owner Kris Barnholden, along with local forager Camille Flanjak of Museum Eats, #10 is all about Mushrooms, with guest collaborators Juno Kim (Juno Kim Catering) and Satoshi Yonemori (Grapes + Soda).

On Tuesday, October 25, join long-time friends  Andrea Carlson (executive chef and owner of Burdock & Co) and Robert Belcham (executive chef and owner of Campagnolo) for the ultimate seafood showdown: a collaborative, ocean-inspired dinner packed with sustainable eats, handcrafted naturalist wines, and cheeky amusements.

Hester Creek Garlic Festival

Celebrate all things garlic at the 5th annual Hester Creek Garlic Festival. Meet local growers and taste samples of garlic, wine and food from Hester Creek and Terrafina Restaurant. Live entertainment will provide a soundtrack to the aromatic festival and admission is by donation to raise funds for the Farm to Table Lunch Program at a nearby Oliver elementary school.

Oliver Cask & Keg

Cask and Keg (formerly Night Fog) is an outdoor, evening event focused on celebrating the creations from local disitilleries, breweries and cideries. This fun, relaxed evening will be filled with live entertainment provided by Moontricks, tasty morsels created by a variety of food trucks and locally made artisan wares on display by select vendors.

When: October 1, 2016 from 6 to 10 pm

Festival of the Grape

Now in its 20th year, this event offers a day of wine tastings, live entertainment and food truck favourites. FOG features 50 local wineries and artisan vendors, an art show, grape stomping, an interactive kids’ zone and live entertainment from Gary Comeau & The Voodoo Allstars.When: October 2, 2016 from Noon to 5 pm

Fungus Among Us Mushroom Festival

The 14th annual Fungus Among Us celebrates all things mushroom, and takes place in Whistler. Check their site soon for details about this popular event.
