Wednesday’s got us feeling fine! Here are seven events to check out in Vancouver today, August 8. Vines Arts Festival, Starlight Theatre and more.

Starlight Theatre at Lansdowne Centre – Raiders of the Lost Ark

  • What: The Drive-In Movie Series returns to Lansdowne Centre for its third year, presented by Fresh Air Cinema. Enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark on an outdoor screen. Take a drive and cuddle up, or bring a blanket and lawn chair and settle in. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis (first 200 vehicles), and the movie audio will be broadcast over FM radio. Keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event, so smoking and alcohol are strictly prohibited.
  • When: Wednesday, August 8, 2018
  • Time: Sunset (gates open at 6 pm)
  • Where: Lansdowne Centre, west parking lot – 5300 No. 3 Road, Richmond

Vines Art Festival 2018

  • What: The fourth-annual multidisciplinary eco-arts celebration, Vines Art Festival, will be taking place at various parks throughout Vancouver. More than 70 performing and visual artists are set to perform, including Kimmortal (a diasporic first generation settler-based on unsurrendered Coast Salish Territories), Katie Cassady (dancer and choreographer from TWObigsteps Collective & Donald Sales/Project 20), Rabbit Richards (a New York-born, Montreal-bred, performance poet), and musicians an̓usáyum̓ (two Indigenous artists from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, singing their own contemporary western music and Coast Salish traditional singing).
  • When: Wednesday, August 8 to Sunday, August 19, 2018

  • Where: Kitsilano Beach, Trout Lake Park, CRAB Park, Granville Island, Roundhouse Community Centre, and Strathcona Park

Traction Conf 2018

  • What: Traction Conf brings founders and leaders from some of the fastest growing tech companies to share their growth secrets. The theme for 2018 is Scaling Up. Business leaders will share their challenges and learnings from scaling their companies to $10M/ $50M/ $100M+ in revenue, acquisition, and IPO.
  • When: Wednesday, August 8 to Thursday, August 9, 2018

Art in the Plaza

  • What: Have fun in the sun and make art. As skyscrapers rise up around City Centre, construct your own cardboard tower. This activity mixes together textiles, drawing, stickers, and lego-like stacking.

Vancouver Quidditch League

  • What: Yes, you too can catch that Golden Snitch, as part of the Vancouver Quidditch League (VQL). The sessions are open to anybody ages 16+ and no previous experience needed. The league runs until August 8, and there will be drop-in sessions all summer.
  • When: Alternating Tuesdays (Central Park in Burnaby) and Wednesdays (Connaught Park in Vancouver) until August 8, 2018

Story-filled Walks in Lynn Canyon Park

  • What: A walk into North Vancouver’s fascinating history with the Mountain Pals. Meet outdoor enthusiasts Max and Molly and hear tales of North Shore mountaineering adventures.
  • When: Wednesdays and Thursdays until August 23, 2018
  • Time: 11 am and 1:30 pm
  • Where: Lynn Canyon Park – 1940 Lynn Ave, North Vancouver. Meet across from the Lynn Canyon Café.

Summer Movie Nights on the Square – Notting Hill

  • What: šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square (formerly Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza) hosts Summer Movie Nights on the Square. Watch Notting Hill on Fresh Air Cinema’s large, four-storey inflatable screen – just be sure to bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets.
  • When: Wednesday, August 8, 2018
  • Time: Activities begin at 5 pm, movie begins at sunset (check sunset times as that will be your best indication of when movies will start)
