Vancouver Craft Beer Week is back for its 5th year and this time, they’re going all out – up in here, up in here.

Running from May 30th to June 7th, the event has been remixed to a hip-hop inspired theme for 2014. But with 21 events over eight days, kicking off with Prevail Prevail of Swollen Members, DJ Flipout, and the Hip Hop Karaoke All Stars for the opening night festivities, there’s something for everyone – not just hip-hop heads.

Back again this year is the annual “charity beer”. “PrevAle” is a unique brew that Gary Lohin of Central City Brewers + Distillers and Matt Phillips of Phillips Brewing Company dreamt up while attending the inaugural Victoria Beer Week back in March.

This special beer with a purpose can be found at government and private liquor stores across the lower-mainland starting May 16th, as well as on draught at participating VCBW venues. Last year’s charity beer raised $3,500 for A Better Life Foundation in support of the Save On Meats Meal Token Program. This year, the Music Heals Foundation will benefit from the beer’s sale.

Event Highlights

The Peak Presents VCBW Opening Night hosted by Prevail

The top of the hops, the beast of the yeast, not our fault if you don’t love malt – best damn party ever thrown! Join Prevail Prevail of Swollen Members, DJ Flipout, the Hip Hop Karaoke All Stars, and 20 of the craft brewing industries finest as they kick off this year’s festivities. Your $49 ticket gets you entertainment, craft beer samples, a souvenir VCBW tasting glass, and door prizes for the those dressed in their hip hop best.

Rare Brews & BBQ

A night of Rare Brews & BBQ featuring limited release or never before seen beers from 10 local breweries (Dead Frog, Parallel 49, Steamworks, Bomber, Deep Cove, Hoyne, Red Truck, Moon Under Water, Driftwood, and Longwood ). These beers will be featured on tap, infused or by the cask. While you savour these rare brews, enjoy a selection of locally sourced meats barbequed by Chef AJ Jackson.

The 5th Element – B-boy & IPA Battle

In the world of hip hop, the only true way to find out who reigns supreme is to battle! With this in mind, 10 of BC’s premier breweries are throwing down to find out who brews the best damn IPA on the market in a blind, winner-take-all competition. Who is the top of the hops? You decide! Your $20 ticket gets you entry, a souvenir tasting glass, three beer tokens, entertainment provided by the infamous Jheric b-boy crew, and a vote in deciding BC’s best IPA. Additional tasting tokens are only $1 and food specials will be running all day!

Cider Rules

Six different premium ciders from Anthem, Reverend Nat and Finn River, will be featured and expertly paired with a different appy / amuse-bouche. The ticket price will include entrance, one cider sample and one appy. Additional samples and appetizer pairings will range in price. The event will start at 6:00pm and run until 9:00pm, when doors will open to the public and for a “cider mingler” with live music.
