Students from outside Canada will be paying a larger price than ever to study at Canada’s second-best ranked university.

University of British Columbia Board of Governors has passed a motion to increase international student tuition by 10 per cent, a controversial decision protested by many throughout the fall.

The Board of Governors, led by university President Arvind Gupta and Chancellor Lindsay Gordon, passed the international tuition motion during their scheduled December 2 meeting. The motion includes three items, all calling for tuition increases.

International students entering UBC in the 2015-2016 academic year will now be paying 10 per cent more in tuition, effective May 1, 2015.

Tuition for those same students will increase by three per cent over the next four years or until they graduate from their current degree program.

Currently enrolled international students will have to pay two per cent more in tuition each year effective May 1, 2015.

The meeting was attended by student representatives speaking on the issue, as well as University RCMP and fewer than a dozen student protestors.

The topic of tuition increases has been a hot-topic issue for many students since the proposal was announced in September. A student protest movement quickly gained traction on campus, holding marches, teach-ins, meetings and votes.

One student in opposition and part of the #IAMASTUDENT movement confirms to Vancity Buzz that they will continue to protest.
