An 18 year old male UBC Student resident is recovering after a failed early morning robbery attempt, which resulted in the student suffering from several knife slashing injuries.

The student was returning to his student residence complex in the 2500 block of West Mall just after 4 a.m. when he was suddenly confronted from behind by an unknown male brandishing a small knife and demanding his wallet and mobile phone.

The attacker lunged towards the student slashing at him as the student attempted to run away. The student escaped from his attacker, foiling the robbery, however the student did sustain several superficial cuts to his back and shoulders requiring minor medical treatment. The attacker fled on foot in an unknown direction after the student escaped.

This attack does not appear to be related to the recent sexual assault series at UBC.

The attacker is described as an Caucasian male approximately 40 years old. This male had a greying beard and short grey hair. He was of average build and was wearing a light coloured hoodie and black sweat pants.

“This is a despicable act of violence that has occurred in a community which is already on high alert and sensitive to other recent attacks on students” says Sgt. Drew Grainger. “The RCMP continue to work tirelessly along with Campus Security and other UBC Stakeholders to make our Campus a safe and secure place. We again urge all students, staff and other residents on Campus to be constantly vigilant and aware of their potential vulnerability when walking alone on Campus in the very early hours of the morning”

UBC RCMP would like to speak to any persons who may have information to identify the attacker in this incident to call the UBC RCMP immediately at 604-224-1322 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
