The Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity at UBC is hosting their third annual ‘Hoops 4 Health‘ event.
‘Hoops 4 Health’ is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, that has proceeds go towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Friends are encouraged to gather teams of three to eight men and women to join the bracket.
The event comes from the mind of Nitai Weinberg, a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. Two years ago, in his first year of university, Weinberg suffered from an unfortunate stroke. He survived, though he was forced to drop out of school in order to undergo a staggering amount of therapy and rehabilitation.
Upon his return to UBC, he wanted to share not just his own story, but the story of other stroke victims and survivors as well. He explains that the difficulty of his situation wasn’t just from rehabilitation, but “being exposed to other people’s experiences as well.” Some of the people he met in the rehab centre were “recovering amputees, some couldn’t speak, some were semi-paralyzed, and some were hooked up to breathing machines”.
Last year was the fraternity’s first basketball tournament for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and they raised over $6,500. This year, their goal is to raise $10,000 and host more than 400 attendees.
The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 31 from 11 am to 5 pm at the War Memorial Gym at UBC. Registration fees are $100 for an entire team, with raffle prizes, and food and drinks at the event. Winning teams will receive prizes from one of their sponsors, including Vancouver Basketball, RYU, Pita Pit, and Body Energy Club. You can also make a donation to the Heart and Stroke foundation online.
Registration closes on Thursday, March 29 at 5 pm.
