Former Canadian Olympic Taekwondo coach arrested for alleged sexual assault

A coach with Canada’s Olympic Taekwondo team has been arrested by Toronto Police for alleged sexual assault of a student over the course of two years.

Toronto Police say Shin Wook Lim, 44, allegedly assaulted a teenage girl between 2015 and 2017 in the Ossington Avenue and Bloor Street West area.

Police confirmed that Lim was the girl’s Taekwondo instructor.

Toronto Police have charged Lim with six counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual exploitation, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual interference.

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Wednesday, June 13 at 11 am.

BC RCMP is also assisting Toronto police with the investigation. According to BC’s Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, prior to moving to Ontario in 2013, Lim resided in British Columbia where he operated Taekwondo training schools.

In a statement, Taekwondo Canada said it is “aware of criminal charges laid against a Toronto-based coach who has recently worked with Team Canada Taekwondo athletes.”

“Taekwondo Canada does not tolerate sexual abuse or misconduct, and guarantees that Taekwondo Canada will deal with this extremely serious issue with one very clear goal — protecting our athletes and the integrity of our sport.”

Taekwondo Canada said  Lim was a was an official coach for Taekwondo Canada at the 2008 Beijing and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
