3 of Vancouver's outdoor pools open next weekend

With sunny skies and a high of 26 degrees coming in the next week, it’s safe to say that Vancouver’s in full swing of its highly-anticipated spring and summer weather.

Leave it to Vancouverites to already be complaining about the heat, as if we had already forgotten about Vancouver’s earlier Snowpocalypse.

Luckily, just in the nick of time, three of Vancouver’s outdoor pools are set to open by next weekend.

The New Brighton pool and Second Beach pool are slotted to open on Saturday, May 19 – just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend. Both pools are heated, full-size outdoor swimming pools in the Sunrise and Stanley Park neighbourhood (respectively). They’ll both remain open until mid-September.

The Kitsilano pool, Vancouver’s only outdoor saltwater pool, is hoping to reopen just in time for Saturday, May 19 as well. The 87-year-old pool shut down earlier than usual last year, just after the Labour Day weekend to allow for an extensive $3.3-million renovation.

The soon-to-be-finished renovations include a replacement of gas-powered pumps with an electric pump to replenish seawater and dewater the pool, the removal and replacement of the pool basin membrane, and the repair of the pool deck structure.

All three pools will be open seven days a week, from 12 to 8:30 pm from Monday to Friday and 10 am to 8:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Hours of operation will extend come Monday, June 11.

If nothing else, it’s fine time to pull out your swimsuit and dig out those floaties. Drop-in fees for the pool start at $6.
