20 things to do in Vancouver this week: October 11 to 14

Thank you Thanksgiving for the greatest gift of all – the four-day week! We’re pretty sure it’ll race past, and soon we’ll be hitting the weekend hard again.

In the meantime, here are 20 things to do in Vancouver this week, from a Bollywood mashup to a dream journey. You know, while you’re digesting all that turkey and all.

Tuesday, October 11

Piya Behrupiuya/Twelfth Night

  • What: A Bollywood mashup of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night by one of Mumbai’s best known theatre groups. The play will be performed in Vancouver with English subtitles to celebrate the upcoming Indian festival Diwali.

Sex Work Storytellers

  • What: Learn about the intersection of gender, sex work and housing. As part of Homelessness Action Week, current and former sex workers will speak to the struggles in securing housing, while UBC researchers outline the housing crisis.

Yogafit

  • What: This class for women only is rooted in vinyasa-based yoga. Fitness elements are incorporated into the yoga sequence in creative and challenging ways. If you’re craving a little more fire, YogaFit will get your heart racing and help build strength.

  • What: Part of the Vancouver International Film Festival, this is the Canadian premiere of Crosscurrent, a poetic, enigmatic and achingly beautiful Chinese film about a connection between a man and a woman from a different time and space.

Wednesday, October 12

The Zombie Syndrome: Dead In The Water

  • What: A bloodthirsty, interactive Halloween adventure that blurs a lot of boundaries when it comes to theatre and performance, as zombie hunters venture both by land and sea to catch – or evade – the hordes of zombie vampires.
  • Where: Secret location on Granville Island
  • When: October 4 to October 31, multiple shows every evening, many already sold out

The VSO at the Movies: Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho

  • What: The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be putting on a special screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic slasher, Psycho, complete with a live orchestral score.

Name A New Park

  • What: A new park will be debuted this week at Yukon Street and 17th Avenue, to much fanfare, including hot drinks, and cookies. More importantly, the City is asking the public to suggest a name for the new park. Parky McPark Face anyone?

Glass Animals

  • What: Glass Animals’ rise has gained the Oxford fourpiece band a legion of fans all over the world. The band’s debut Zaba, released on Harvest Records, has so far sold nearly half a million copies worldwide and amassed 200 million Spotify streams.

TILT! Public Pinball Tournament
