The Vancouver Sun and The Province to be run as one newsroom, part of Postmedia's cost cutting program

Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey today announced that as part of the company’s cost cutting program, local newspapers The Vancouver Sun and The Province will see their newsrooms merged into one. Currently, the two newspapers operate as two separate entities on separate floors of the 200 Granville Street building.

The mergers aren’t just happening in Vancouver, but in Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton as well, where dual brands would run under one newsroom: Calgary Sun and Calgary Herald, Edmonton Sun and Edmonton Journal, and Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun.

Cuts to the company are happening nationwide, with approximately 90 journalists laid off today, and more coming soon.

“In the next few days, we will also be introducing a buyout program in the Vancouver and Ottawa newsrooms as part of this one newsroom initiative,” Godfrey told staff in a memo.
