It’s iconic. You drive through the archway entrance to Granville Island, and there it is on the left, standing just like it did in 1973—the Granville Island Keg.
It’s modern nostalgia to walk through its doors. The stories, the experiences, the people that have dined or worked there, are too many too count.
General Manager Barry Cox says the Granville Island Keg is a prominent and consistent fixture on the island. “This was the fifth Keg to ever open its doors. We’ve been here since the beginning. Forty-one years strong in tradition; the history of this Keg lends itself to the nostalgic vibe of Granville Island.”
And, for four decades Vancouverites have been enjoying everything this hidden gem has to offer.“Our proximity to the Aquabus and False Creek ferries makes it easy to pop in for a drink and an appetizer and then head to a Whitecaps or Canucks game. At the same time, all of the things the Keg built its reputation on are a huge part of this location: Quality, comfort, value.”
Cox realizes that because Granville Island is a popular tourist destination, for many visitors it may be their first Keg experience. “We like to recognize our first time guests; from the moment you walk in and are warmly greeted by our hosts to the moment you leave, you’ll be made to feel like you’ve been coming here for years. That’s what we strive for with all our guests,” says Cox.
But it’s not just about the past and present; the Granville Island Keg is constantly looking to the future. That includes its new modern bar menu. “I’m really excited for the new bar menu and our Happy Hour,” says Cox. “It still offers all the Keg favourites, plus some great updated staples Crispy Shrimp, Three-way Filet. You are going to open the bar menu and be happy to see The Keg Caesar, but be intrigued at the same time to see we’ve added wines on tap.”
As for Cox’s favourite Keg Classic? “My classic Keg favourite has got to be the Prime Rib, but the Tuna Tartare has quickly become my new favourite and what I often encourage guests to try. It is light and fresh and perfect for sharing”
If you’ve been there, you know; if you haven’t, you need to. The Granville Island Keg is a hidden gem for your next night out.
