That Barista Thing, sponsored by Blenz Coffee, celebrates Vancouver’s barista culture and latte art scene. That Barista Thing goes down on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Vancouver Public Library (350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC). Anyone can go and check out this FREE event. What’s even better is that Blenz will be serving up free lattes and coffees to attendees!
Typically industry-only events, That Barista Thing brings the barista competition into the public realm, literally. This open to the public event hosts world-class baristas from local cafes, coffee companies and from as far away as Japan. Get ready for do-or-die head-to-head competitions in two categories: Free Pour Latte Art and Etching Latte Art, both of which offer some of the largest cash prizes for a barista competition of this type anywhere in the world:
• Prizes in the Free Pour Latte Art category are $2,501 for the winner, $1,000 for 2nd place and $500 for 3rd place.
• Prizes in the Etching Latte Art category are $1,000 for the winner and $500 for 2nd place.
Third Annual Vancouver International Latte Art Competition. Judges include, Richard Wolak from the Vancouver Foodster.com, Eagranie Yuh from The Well Temper Chocolatier, Wayne Wright from Bravo Coffee, Anya Levykh from EAT Magazine
Besides the latte art events, there will be public etching latte art workshops with Blenz Coffee Master Barista Aki Tokuhara, tea leaf readings with clairvoyant Maxine Friend, a traditional Japanese matcha green tea ceremony, a traditional Chinese oolong tea ceremony and live art performance by Jack Wu. All these events are free and open to the public. As host, Blenz Coffee will be serving free lattes and coffee, and hot chocolate for kids.
