Surrey is loaded with fun events in May. To get you started, here are 10 things to do around the city this month.

Surrey Carnival

  • What: West Coast Amusements, the largest Canadian midway operation in Western Canada is coming to Surrey. Features exciting rides, tasty midway concessions, and fun for the whole family.
  • When: May 10 to 14
  • Where: Guildford Mall – 10355 152 Street, Surrey
  • Cost: $35 for wristband, six rides for $16.99

South Surrey Garden Club Plant Sale

  • What: South Surrey Garden Club’s annual plant sale, featuring perennials, shrubs, vegetables and more. There will also be a Mother’s Day gift table for children, as well as coffee and cookies to enjoy.
  • Where: St Mark’s Anglican Church – 12953 20th Ave, Surrey
  • When: May 13 from 9 am to noon
  • Admission: Free

Mother’s Day Tea at Historic Stewart Farm

  • What: Treat mum like the queen she is with tea at Historic Stewart Farm. Nibble cucumber sandwiches, indulge in sweets and scones baked in our wood stove, and make a craft together.
  • Where: Historic Stewart Farm – 13723 Crescent Road, Surrey
  • When: May 13 and 14 from noon to 3 pm
  • Register: Online, $16

Rising Tides + Skin Boats

  • What: A community eco art project exploring our changing ocean and climate. Join Village Surrey for a knowledge exchange and social engagement art project to process what we know about our changing oceans and climate, and visually weave a collective response for a hopeful future.
  • Where: Surrey City Centre Library – Room 120 – 10350 University Drive
  • When: May 17 from 6 to 8:30 pm
  • Cost: Free

Festival du Ballet

  • What: See the talents and abilities of up-and-coming ballet dancers from across the Lower Mainland during the Festival du Ballet. Ranging in age from 3 to 21, dancers compete in the categories of classical, pointe, demi-character, contemporary ballet, interpretive, modern, repertoire, and adult.
  • Where: Main Stage at Surrey Arts Centre – 13750 88 Avenue, Surrey
  • When: May 14 to 17
  • Tickets: At the door, $3 per day, programs $5

40th Annual Bed Races and Decorated Bike Parade

  • What: The Bed Race starts with a demonstration from participants of the World Free Style Round-Up Skateboard Championships, followed by a Western themed Bike Parade. The main event is an elimination-style Bed Race where the prizes for the winners of each division are just as quirky as the race itself: the winners of the men’s race receive the coveted Bed Pan trophy, the women’s division competes for the Chamber Pot and the media division go after the Stone Pig prize.

  • When: May 18 from 6 to 7:30 pm
  • Cost: Free

Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair

  • What: One of North America’s longest running and most entertaining rodeos returns with competitions, live entertainment, and food and fun. The Cloverdale Invitational Rodeo will once again feature the world’s best Cowboys and Cowgirls as they compete for cash prizes.
  • Where: Cloverdale Fairgrounds – Agriplex Building – 6050 176 Street, Surrey
  • When: May 19 to 22
  • Tickets: Online, $10-$35

Tagore Spring Festival 2017

  • What: The 3rd annual Tagore Spring Festival is a multicultural celebration of Spring through dance, music and poetry. Artists from different backgrounds will perform presentations highlighting their traditions and heritages. Presented by Vancouver Tagore Society.
  • Where: Main Stage at Surrey Arts Centre – 13750 88 Avenue, Surrey
  • When: May 20 at 6:30 pm
  • Admission: By donation / pay-it-forward

Surrey International Children’s Festival

  • What: The annual Surrey International Children’s Festival inspires young hearts and minds to greater possibilities, and celebrates the rich and diverse cultural heritage through performing and visual arts experiences. Watch international and national performances at five venues, and explore dozens of hands-on art activities, including poetry, animation, clay, and music.
  • Where: Bear Creek Park and Surrey Arts Centre – 13750 88 Avenue, Surrey
  • When: May 25 to 27
  • Tickets: Online, $7-$10. Site entrance free.

KidPreneur Market Day

  • What: Check out the Young Entrepreneur Learning Lab Market Day and support local KidPreneurs as they debut their handcrafted products and launch their mini-businesses at the Semiahmoo Shopping Centre.
