Snow on Cypress Mountain means opening of ski hills...today!

By DH Vancouver Staff, DH Vancouver Staff Nov 14, 2012 7:38 am

Grouse Mountain enjoyed the bragging rights yesterday for being the first of the North Shore mountains to open their hills for skiing. Coming to a very close second – by mearly hours – will be today’s opening of Cypress Mountain.

The North Shore Mountains have received a big douse of unexpected heavy snowfall over the long weekend, with more than 30 centimetres falling on top of 30 centimetres of man-made snow on the slopes of Cypress Mountain. The North Shore ski slopes, including Cypress and Grouse, typically open on the first weekend of December. However, early heavy snowfalls in November over the last two years since the Olympics have led to much earlier openings. In the 2011/2012 winter season, Cypress had its earliest ever opening on November 8, 2011.

From CypressMountain.com:

Opening Day:  Another Early Opening Wednesday, November 14 at Cypress Mountain with Intermediate or Expertterrain only on our Eagle Express Quad Chair – the most and best Terrain open in British Columbia!  We are waiting for the rain to pass through today and then open tomorrow morning with forecasted great weather and over 300 metres or 1000 vertical feet of Skiing and Riding on a High Speed Quad!

Our Grooming Crew are shaping up the huge snow we have on the Olympic Terrain on the north face of Black Mountain!  Upper Ricker’s (Upper Fork), mid Jasey Jay, and lower Jasey Jay/Panorama received mega tons of Man Made Snow combined with natural snow and they’ll be in excellent condition top to bottom.  Stayed tuned tomorrow morning for videos of the excellent conditions!

The new “Skate Park” on the Upper Mountain off Eagle Express’ Top Terminal will be smokin’ with a variety of 12 rails and boxes – get ready to cycle this Park then continue down with some great free-riding right to the base – Lower Jasey Jay and Panorama will be wall to wall!!  Click HERE for the latest park post.

We’ll continue to haul snow to the “Beginner” slopes to work on having them open as soon as possible.  Another snowmaking window may also kick in on Wednesday night and our Best in the Business Snowmaking Crew will be all over it.
