It’s official! Slide The City in North Vancouver will return this summer, becoming a major two-day event spanning an entire weekend.

In a meeting last night, North Vancouver City Councillors unanimously voted to extend this year’s 1,000-foot-long water slip-and-slide event into a two-day event on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, coinciding with Car Free Day. City staff asserted that a multi-day event would allow the Utah-based organizers to address long lines and sell more tickets to meet the high demand.

Last year, tickets sold out early – in just two weeks in late-spring, marking one of the few times that Slide The City has sold out before the day of the event.

Over 6,000 people slid down the slide on August 22 from 9 am to 8 pm. Planning is still in the early stages, but City staff hinted that with a two-day arrangement this year, operational hours could be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with 4,000 tickets sold per day.

Following last year’s last minute confusion, tickets will also be sold in a different format, with people choosing tickets for a certain sliding time. With a two-day period, there could also be opportunities for different themes at certain times of the day, such as child and family times and entertainment geared for adults.

In an effort to slow down the speed of the slide, staff and organizers are also exploring the idea of moving the starting point of the slide one block higher up Lonsdale Avenue – at Victoria Park – so that the slide ends on a lower grade.
