Slickity Jim’s has made the move west and opened up a second location on West 7th Avenue where Lotus Eaters Catering once stood.
Those familiar with the casual neighbourhood joint on Main Street will be happy to discover that the new 20-seater, Slickity Jim’s Chat & Choux (the “Chew” from the first restaurant has been replaced with Choux for this location, thanks to the eatery’s proximity to the Francophone centre), will feature a very similar menu to its big cousin.
Diners can expect to find a diverse range of eats, like soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers, which are made in-house, using only the freshest of ingredients.
Co-owner Mike Zalman says, the food will be “a little more elevated” than the food at the original Main Street locale. However, Zalman is quick to remark that “the Choux is nothing fancy. At the end of the day we are here to feed people. We take the simple things seriously.”
Not yet licensed, Slickity Jim’s Chat & Choux offers a range of non-alcoholic beverages, including a variety of enticing fresh mocktails, like the made-to-order tomato juice, which is comprised of tomatoes, melon, lime juice and a swig of Slickity Jim’s own homemade lemonade.
As for the new digs, Zalman discovered that the Fairview Slopes property had become available a few months back, a space he had long coveted. “It was a no brainer,” Zalman says. “I abandoned a food truck mid-build to take it on.”
Along with partner Anette Payne, a long time employee, Zalman took on a serious renovation of an old café that was past its prime. The duo have worked hard to transform the space into a comfortable and casual diner. “My philosophy is that a diner need not be harkening back to the 60s but a concept reimagined for 2015,” says Zalman.
With no a reservation policy, Slickity Jim’s Chat & Choux is open daily from 8 a.m to 4 p.m, and seats customers on a first come first serve basis.
