Sled Island Music Festival, the five-day music and arts festival in the heart of Calgary, AB, begins tomorrow, Wednesday, June 18th.
With this year’s motto, “Nobody Rains On Our Parade”, Sled Island is back with a vengeance after being rained out last year amidst the Alberta flooding. This year features headliners, Spiritualized, Neko Case, St. Vincent, Rocket From The Crypt, Rhye, Blitzen Trapper, Killer Mike, Joel Plaskett, and more.
Already this June, Sled Island hosted an opening party with Shad and conducted a successful bicycle scavenger hunt last weekend.
Here are a few tips to make your Sled Island experience better:
Ride your bike- Some of the venues are fairly spread out and walking or waiting for a cab just doesn’t cut it when your favourite band is performing in ten minutes. As bikes are becoming the most popular mode of transportation at Sled Island, the organizers have put together this thoughtful bicycle safety infographic:
Attend the East Village Block Party- Do whatever you can to get out of work early on Thursday and head down to the Riverwalk Plaza for a free all-ages afternoon dance party.
Choose venues wisely- If it’s raining, a venue with two floors is your best bet. The #1 Legion, Commonwealth, and the Palomino all feature upstairs and downstairs stages, so your next show is always only steps away.
Spend wisely- Sled Island is proud to offer festival pass holders a variety of discounts at a wide range of Community Partners throughout the city during the festival. All you need to do is show your wristband to get the deals.
Get educated- Listen to Vancity Buzz’s exclusive Sled Island playlist of must-see acts.
Support Vancouver musicians- BESTiE, NEEDS, Mu, High Ends and many more Vancouver bands are performing at this year’s festival; go show them your love.
Try something new- With over thirty venues across the city, you are bound to stumble across a new dive, playing some music that’s top notch. Take a chance and poke your head through that doorway.
If you couldn’t wait and you’ve ordered your pass already, it can once again be picked up at the historic Fairmont Palliser, located at 133 9th Ave SW. Pass pickup will be open for business on the following dates and times:
