A 68-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman are dead following a car crash at Seymour and Davie Streets on Monday evening, and police are trying to figure out what happened.

Three pedestrians were also taken to hospital with injuries that ranged from lacerations and bruising to a broken femur and punctured lung.

Speed was a factor in the crash, says the Vancouver Police Department, but investigators will be working with the coroner to find out if underlying medical conditions may have been a cause.

The crash happened when a Lexus travelling north on Seymour Street lost control, went off the road, and struck a large tree and then a pole, according to Constable Brian Montague.

The pedestrians were injured by the falling tree and flying debris.
