Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds is returning home this spring to reprise his role as Wade Wilson, the ‘Merc With A Mouth,’ in Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Deadpool.
It was revealed in early-December 2014 by Deadline that Reynolds would play the role of mercenary Deadpool in the character’s own feature film, and Vancity Buzz entertainment contributor Lindsay Barker has confirmed that filming in Vancouver is expected to begin on March 23.

Test footage of Reynolds’ head-to-toe costume-donning character within an action sequence was leaked onto YouTube in July 2014. The video has positively received and has clocked over 3.7-million views to date.
This is the same Canadian comic book character Reynolds played in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was also partially filmed in Vancouver.
In Marvel’s comic book universe, Wilson is depicted as a smart-mouthed mercenary who faces a terminal cancer diagnosis. With few options, he joins a secret joint American-Canadian superhuman enhancement experiment that attempts to replicate the mutant healing powers of Wolverine. It cures him of his cancer and gives him new healing abilities, but his body is horribly scarred from the treatment.
After his escape from the military experiment, Wilson returns to his mercenary activities and wears a costume that hides his scars and keeps his identity a secret. The plot of Deadpool will take place after the events of the 2009 film, a storyline that happened before the character was consumed with a cancer diagnosis.
Deadpool will be directed by Tim Miller and is currently scheduled for a May 27, 2016 theatrical release. Reynolds has also previously played roles in two other major comic book-based films: Marvel’s Hannibal King in the 2004 film Blade: Trinity and DC Comics’ Green Lantern in the 2011 film of the same name – a movie that was poorly received and made only $220-million worldwide.
It will be a busy year for Vancouver’s film production industry. A record number of American television shows are being shot in the city in addition to the movies that are slated to be filmed here, including big budget productions such as Deadpool and the third Star Trek film starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
