“Red Widow” is a new ABC drama by, Melissa Rosenberg (executive producer/head write “Dexter”, and screenwriter of the Twilight franchise), Howard Klein (executive producer “The Office” and “Parks & Recreation”), and Endemol Studios (“Hell On Wheels”), join forces to bring you a riveting new thriller that takes you inside the world of crime, intrigue and will show you just how far one woman will go to protect her family.
The show is based around Martha Walraven, played by Radha Mitchell (“Silent Hill”, “Man on Fire”), a suburban housewife who’s living the good life in Northern California. She has a loving husband, a beautiful home overlooking Sausalito, and three amazing kids. But behind this perfect facade is a family of organized criminals.
Martha’s father Andrei Petrova, played by Rade Serbedzija (“Snatch”, “Batman Begins”), her brother, and her husband Franklin, all make their living through illegal means, and up until now, she has turned a blind eye to this fact. But when Franklin is murdered, Martha uncovers a tenacity she never knew she had. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge her husband and keep her family alive, even if it means filling her husband’s shoes and joining the family business. As Martha digs into this dark underworld, she’ll test her own strength, relying on her resourcefulness, determination and family ties like never before.
Although the show is based on the Dutch series “Penoza”, “Red Widow” continues the new tradition of women kicking butt to protect their families and shows great potential. The script looks good on paper and with seasoned actors such as Jamie Ray Newman (“Made of Honor”) playing Martha’s sister Kat, Luke Goss (“Hellboy 2”, “Death Race 2”) playing Luther, a loyal bodyguard, and “ER” alumnus Goran Visnjic, who is set to play the series central mob boss – It should all come together nicely.
“Red Widow” is filming in Vancouver, BC from August 23 to November 15, 2012, with a late fall premier.
