This March Raise Your Hands Against Racism with Spice Radio.
Now in its second year, Raise Your Hands Against Racism challenges people around the world to raise their hands, and show that the colour of our skin shouldn’t define us or separate us. The original event was conceived by Spice Radio 1200AM broadcaster Shushma Datt, inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi.
“Everybody throws colour at one another, and under those millions of colours you don’t know who is there,” Datt told Vancity Buzz. “There is no distinction between people. No caste, no religion, no one; everybody is the same.”
In that vein, Raise Your Hands Against Racism asks people to put colour on their hands, and post a picture of them raised to social media. By showing the world you stand against racism, and challenging your friends and family to do the same, Datt says the world will know that hate and violence will not stop someone from achieving their dreams.
“It is the tenacity of people to be able to… stand in the face of adversity, and better themselves,” she says. “To dream is most important. Your dreams will be realized no matter what.”
Everyone has a story to tell. Share yours using the hashtag #HandsAgainstRacism on social media.
Alternatively, you can submit your experiences with racism and how you overcame it to [email protected] with “No To Racism” as the subject title and it may be shared on Vancity Buzz. Here are some pointers for submissions through email:
