Vancouver Pride Week kicks off with the official proclamation by Mayor Gregor Robertson at noon today.

Prior to the raising, a discussion occurred in the City Council chambers on issues revolving around discrimination and state-sponsored policies against LGBT people in other countries.

In addition to the traditional raising of the rainbow flag on the north lawn of Vancouver City Hall, a giant second flag is also hanging on the side of the building.

LGBT festivities take place throughout the week, culminating with the Vancouver Pride Parade and Sunset Beach Pride Festival on Sunday, August 3.

More than 650,000 people are expected to attend Sunday’s Pride events in downtown Vancouver.
