Poutines in Vancouver: Mean Poutine

DH Vancouver Staff Sep 13, 2012 8:13 am

On one of our previous poutine posts for one of Vancouver’s famous poutine spots, Fritz European Fry House, someone asked if it was better than Mean Poutine. We didn’t try it yet, so we had no clue. Honestly, we didn’t even know about it so we had to try it. Mean Poutine is right off Granville on Nelson, also in the heart of the Granville clubbing scene and open until 4:30AM!

This place is far from authentic. Though it has a French looking man in a beret as their logo, they offer flavours like Fried Chicken, Philly Cheesesteak, Mama’s Meatballs, Southern BBQ, and Yam poutines to name a few. Does it mean it’s not good? Nope, it’s pretty good!

Mean Poutine beer batters and fry their french fries fresh (about 15 minutes), leaving them crisp and airy with a texture similar to KFC fries, but thicker. The fresh cheese curds melt a lot especially from the very hot gravy and aren’t squeaky. The gravy isn’t as salty as Fritz, and overall, it’s actually a better value. There’s a lot, and the prices range from $6 to $9. The Fried Chicken poutine was pretty good too, as the chicken strips had some bit of spice, and were actually still quite tender and juicy.

To satisfy the late night crowd, they also serve hot dogs, and red bull. We visited right after work, so it wasn’t busy at all. It can get very busy on the weekends.
