A police incident in Port Coquitlam on Sunday night led to a standoff between officers and a distraught male with a gun, who later died at the scene.

According to Coquitlam RCMP, officers were called to a residence in the 2100 block of Audrey Drive just after 7 pm after receiving reports that a man had allegedly fired gun shots into the air outside of a home.

Local police officers called for backup, which led to the deployment of the Integrated Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team.

When officers arrived, they located an armed male outside a residence, and it is alleged that shots were fired. Video and photos posted onto social media of the incident show a tank-like police vehicle roaming the area and heavily-armed officers using smoke and flash bombs.

After shots were allegedly fired, the male was later located deceased behind a vehicle with injuries that are believed to be self-inflicted.

No officers or other individuals were injured in the incident.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) will assume conduct of the investigation and determine whether there is a connection to the actions of police and the injuries the man sustained. All aspects and circumstances of the scene, evidence, and incident will be subject to independent investigation and verification by IIO BC.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.
