One man is dead after a police-involved shooting incident at Nanaimo’s Departure Bay ferry terminal on Vancouver Island today.

In a release, police said the incident unfolded as the Island District Emergency Response
Team was assisting Nanaimo RCMP with the arrest of a man in relation to a “violent” carjacking incident in another part of BC.

“The vehicle was stopped by police and a takedown was initiated as the male disembarked from the ferry,” said police.

Initial information based on police accounts is that the male exited the vehicle, with what was believed to be a firearm.

Shots were fired as a result, and the suspect was fatally wounded.

Neither of the officers involved in the incident, nor any other members of the public were injured.

Now, police said the scene, as well as any evidence, has been secured, and the office of BC’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been called in and are deploying to the scene.

IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting to see if there is any link between police actions and the man’s injuries.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further
information is being released by police.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.
