Pokémon Gym removed from Coquitlam Hell’s Angels clubhouse

Pokémon GO players will no longer be “Catchen’ ’em all” outside of a Coquitlam Hell’s Angels clubhouse.

Police say the game’s creator has pulled a controversial “Pokémon Gym,” which had been drawing players to congregate outside the Angels’ HQ.

Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton with B.C.’s anti-gang unit, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, says he emailed game makers late last month, and is pleased at how quickly they acted.

“I received an email late Monday night from the app developer Niantic, advising that at their next app update they would be removing [it]… I think it’s great customer service, I think they’re very responsive to not only the needs of the community, but any public safety issues.”

Houghton adds it’s also fortunate that there were no incidents in the several weeks the Gym was located outside the clubhouse.

“We did raise the issue very quickly, and the developer responded very quickly. So we feel we got ahead of any potential issues.”

Pokémon Gyms are virtual turf that players can battle for in real-world locations, sometimes drawing crowds who hang around for hours.

In July, police issued a warning about the Gym, calling its location “highly inappropriate.”
