Play On! Vancouver begins this weekend

The world’s largest street hockey tournament and sports festival is coming to Coquitlam Centre this weekend and Vancity Buzz will be a part of it.

Play On! will take place in 11 cities across Canada this year. Winners from each tournament in select divisions will participate in the National Championship in Lethbridge, Alberta.

You read right, Play On! has a national championship. This is serious business.

Prizing has not been announced but in past years the Play On! Organization has awarded teams with $40,000.

With divisions for all ages, skill levels and both genders, literally anyone can play. The record for youngest player to participate in Play On! is 4-years-old.

Play On! Event Director, Melissa Sbrega, had this to say about the tournament:

“this tournament is more about just street hockey, it’s a sports festival that celebrates our great nation’s favourite past time.”

As someone that participated in last year’s tournament, I can vouch for this. You’ll find food trucks, interactive games and numerous games going on at once.

The celebrity game is back again this year. Last year, former Vancouver Canuck Cliff Ronning and Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens were the headliners. This year’s game will take place on Saturday at noon.

This year, Vancity Buzz will be sending a team to participate in the UPS Corporate Division, which takes place on Saturday. Proceeds from the corporate division will be donated to the United Way. Other national charity partners include Men’s Health and Right to Play. The ‘Redwood Cup’ replica will be on the line, so the stakes couldn’t be any higher.
