New Westminster will be home to an electronic music festival. Piknic Electronik – which has incarnations in Montreal, Barcelona, Dubai, and Melbourne – proposed Monday to New Westminster City Council that the festival make an appearance in the city come August, and it was unanimously approved.
Beyond Marketing Group says they’d want the festival to run for two days at Westminster Pier Park for a trial run – pending success of the festival, the city would consider making it a summertime staple for up to five weekend dates.
“I think it’s going to be a really unique and interesting event, and it’s going to draw a lot of Millennials and young families,” New Westminster mayor Jonathan Coté tells Vancity Buzz. “There’s been a big fan base for electronic music and I think it’s going to be an incredible venue right on the waterfront.”
Piknic Electronik has taken place in Montreal every week throughout the spring and summer for over 10 years and is coming back to the city with 22 events this year.
The Westminster Pier Park is able to accommodate 4,200 people, and while the festival largely targets millennials, it’s considered a family-friendly event.
The proposed dates are August 18 and 19.
