Update: Picnurbia installation will be removed tomorrow, a few days early to accommodate more construction work before the road supposedly opens to traffic on Tues. Sept. 6. This will put a quick end to debate over homeless people and their stuff taking over the installation. Enjoy the last day today Vancouver!

VIVA Vancouver has been quite successful thus far as the city of Vancouver livens up the city scape on the weekends. One of the newer initaitives is Picnurbia, dumb name I know but a cool concept nonetheless. From now until September 5, go for the ultimate urban picnic in the heart of downtown as Robson Square, yes the construction laced Robson Square is now complete and shut down to traffic, turns into a giant pseudo picnic bench.

Located on Robson Street, between Robson Square and the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is a rolling bright yellow artificial turf, grassy hills, beach umbrellas and built-in benches. It’s an ideal space to sit back and relax and pretend to be on the beach. Women in bikini’s are not only welcome, but encouraged.
