Besides picking up poop, ask any urban pet owner what the most annoying thing is about owning an animal in the city and they’ll likely say the same thing: lugging around huge bags of food. Double that if you don’t have a car.

Well, a new service is freeing urban pet owners from those annoying trips to the store, and dropping off those huge bags of dog and cat food right to your door. And the best part? Free delivery!

There’s no catch. Honestly. Naturally Urban Pet Food Delivery doesn’t advertise or have a storefront, so it has no overhead, and it’s passing on those savings to pet owners. You just log onto the site and pick the right healthy pet food for your companion, from brands like Natural Balance, Wellness and Open Farm, the first pet food company to use Ocean Wise certified fish. It’s the same price as what you’d pay in store, and Naturally Urban will beat the price if you find it cheaper somewhere else.

It’s not just kibble: there’s also bagged treats, freeze-dried meals and raw meat for both cats and dogs, as well as kitty litter.

With a focus on sustainability and wellness, Naturally Urban only sell the brands you’d find in a natural pet food store, and that’s exactly how company founder Brian Feldbloom wants it.

“We look at the ingredients lists, monitor reviews, and stay on top of veterinary reports. We do our homework,” he tells Vancity Buzz.

The company delivers to Vancouver and the North Shore between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and there are plans to expand to other Lower Mainland areas within a year. And, unlike some unnamed cable and internet providers, they’ll give you a one-hour delivery window so you’re not waiting around all day to get it.

There’s also a fantastic charitable component.  10 per cent of your initial purchase, and five per cent on subsequent buys, is donated to the charitable partner of your choice. That includes great local animal charities and non-profits including Paws 4 Hope, A Loving Spoonful, Best Friends for Life, Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue and the BC SPCA.

So between the giving back, the low prices and the time savings, pet owners really have nothing to lose by trying them out.

“It’s truly a win-win-win scenario,” Feldbloom says.

Vancity Buzz pet owners can save $10 on their first purchase by using the code VANBUZZROCKS at www.nupetfooddelivery.com
