On January 18, 2014, Opticentre put it all out there. Those who are part of the company all believe in the goal, and that is to change the eyewear industry.
We know it’s a long hard road, but we’re committed, because we feel it’s time and because people deserve to not have to spend so much money on their eyewear, or at least get what they want, which is never guaranteed when shopping online.
Part of the challenge, we discovered, over the last year, was convincing people who hadn’t shopped with us before, that we had a quality product for as low as $39.
So, what did we do? We held a one year anniversary celebration with everyone, and offered a free pair of glasses to every person who brought their prescription, with no catch, and included up to 1.56 index lenses for single vision and progressive lenses.
We had a pretty good idea that the event would garner some attention, but we had no idea that it would be as big as it was.
The amazing customers that came that day to celebrate with us began lining up at around 7 a.m., braving the cold of the thankfully rainless day, and some staying in line for as long as four or five hours.
We welcomed Virgin Radio on site to play some music for us and their wonderful staff made conversation and brought smiles to people’s faces as they waited, and they even arranged for Starbucks to come by with some fresh, hot coffee for the lineup. Concurrently we advertised through multiple other radio stations, newspapers and thanks to our friends at Vancity Buzz we were able to utilize the power of social media to garner an unbelievable response.
We did our best, with the help of our digital agency, Digital Fluency, to prepare for the day’s event, neither party doing anything to this extent previously, by having extra staff in attendance, and trying to help customers with their selections as fast as possible. Alas, there were only so many opticians to go around so there was some hold up there, but most everyone was very patient and happy to wait while we got them into their selection and perfectly into their prescription.
Overall, we consider the day to have been a success. We certainly gained a lot of exposure and were able to help a lot of people, even receiving sincere thank yous from people who were in situations where they may not have been able to afford a new pair of glasses in a long time, and were very much in need.
Opticentre ended up dispensing almost 350 glasses with an over 90 per cent satisfaction rate, created a lot of new friends and hopefully continued customers with the store.
Thank you to everyone who made the day a success.
After the event we launched a contest for those who were picking up their glasses that they ordered at the event, where they could upload a picture of themselves on our Facebook page and Like the page to be entered to win an iPad, which we’re announcing on Friday, March 7.
Make sure to check back on our blog or on Vancity Buzz on Monday, March 10 for the announcement of our newest promo because you’re not going to believe your eyes. #GetWeird
