Dolphin Cinemas is closing its doors on Tuesday May 27, 2014 after fifty years of business. The Burnaby cinema, located at 4555 Hastings Street, will be torn down and replaced by a four-storey apartment complex and retail centre.
The Dolphin was the last independent cinema in Burnaby, leaving filmgoers with only SilverCity Metropolis at Metrotown as the only option to watch flicks locally. The problem for Dolphin Cinemas was the industry’s transition from film to digital, which is an extremely costly conversion and has caused the closure of countless other independent cinemas in the continent.
Rahim Manji, operator of Dolphin Cinemas since 2010, told the Burnaby Now that although he had been searching for a new location for a year, he was unable to secure a spot for the cinema.
He also operates Hollywood 3 Cinemas in Surrey and Pitt Meadows, but will continue to look to reopen Dolphin Cinemas if there is a realistic option.
If you would like to catch one last flick at Dolphin Cinemas, check out their website for their last showtime on Tuesday, May 27. As with most Metro Vancouver theatres, they offer discounted rates on Tuesdays.
