MUJI at Metrotown to reopen next month with huge expansion

MUJI’s store at Metropolis at Metrotown shopping centre is barely one year old, but it is already set for a reopening that will reveal a significant expansion of the store space.

The Japanese clothing and household goods retailer announced today that it will close its store for a few weeks beginning on October 1, so that the existing store can be amalgamated with the under-construction adjacent expansion space, which replaces three retail units.

This location experiences some of the company’s highest sales in Canada, and it is consistently crowded with shoppers.

When the store reopens later-October, the store’s footprint will grow from 7,700-sq-ft to 12,305-sq-ft, making it the second largest MUJI location in Canada – right after the 14,507-sq-ft Robson Street flagship store in downtown Vancouver, which is the largest MUJI store outside of Asia.

While the Metrotown location will carry more products and new services – such as the Interior Advisory service, the Style Advisory service, Aroma Bar, embroidery and label printing customization services, and MUJI Canada’s first complimentary alteration service – the company has since clarified that it will still be short of an official flagship-calibre designation.

“When we opened our first store in Western Canada, in August 2017, we were very surprised and happy to see so many people coming to visit us,” said Toru Akita, president of MUJI Canada, in a statement.

“One year later, we think it’s time to thank our loyal customers by offering them a bigger and better MUJI Metrotown.”

MUJI currently has eight locations in the country, including five stores in the Toronto area and three stores in the Vancouver area. The other Metro Vancouver store is located at CF Richmond Centre.
