Yesterday, the City of Vancouver granted final rezoning approval to local real estate developer Rize Alliance to develop The Independent at 285 East 10th Avenue in Mount Pleasant.

After seven years moving through the city’s planning and approval process with extensive community input, this is the final step for the city in granting rezoning, delivering on the Mount Pleasant Community Plan for land use, urban design, housing, economic development, community services, and culture. The Independent will stand as an iconic centerpiece in one of the city’s most vibrant and popular neighbourhoods.

“We’d like to thank the community for their continued support during this process,” says Will Lin, CEO of Rize Alliance Properties. “We’re looking forward to the groundbreaking in 2015, and providing new homes for people wanting to live in Mount Pleasant.”

The Independent will be the tallest building in the neighbourhood. It will also incorporate the first installation of Mount Pleasant’s new public realm design. The building embraces the diverse range of architectural styles that currently define the area and reinterprets them, blending a variety of materials to create an unabashedly contemporary and innovative expression that is uniquely Mount Pleasant.
