Vancouver has the highest cost of living in the whole of Canada, a new Mercer survey has found – but the most expensive city in the world may surprise you.

The global consulting firm’s annual Cost of Living Survey is aimed at helping employers figure out pay and allowances for workers transferred overseas.

It surveys hundreds of cities and measures the comparative cost of more than 200 items, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.

Overall, Mercer found the most expensive city in the world is Luanda in Angola, followed by Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich, and Singapore.

In Canada, Vancouver is ranked the the 107th most expensive place to live in the world, up from 142nd place in last year’s rankings.

Meanwhile, Toronto came in 119th place, up from 143rd last year, and Montreal came in 129th place, up from 155th place last year.

Meanwhile, Calgary was ranked 143rd, up from 162nd last year. Ranking at 152nd place Ottawa was judged the least expensive Canadian city.

As for cheaper places to live, it might be time to move to Tunisia, where Tunis was ranked the cheapest city in the world.

Or if that doesn’t appeal, how about somewhere in Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Namibia, or Malawi? Time to ask for a transfer…
