MEZZI wearable technology gets smart without sacrificing style

DH Vancouver Staff Jan 22, 2015 9:35 am

While the wearables market has seen tremendous growth over the past few years, luxury fashion brands have been noticeably absent from the equation. But the market isn’t slowing down any time soon. The Business of Fashion reports that wearable, personal, tech devices are expected to be an approximately “$10 billion industry by 2016.” While the technology is clearly making rapid strides, most of the designs sacrifice fashion for function. So as the wearable tech trend emerges, the question remains: will design and technology move at the same pace or will we have to sacrifice one for the other?

Enter Vancouver’s newest luxury goods designer, MEZZI. Designed in Vancouver, MEZZI is on a mission to disrupt the luxury accessories and wearables markets with a collection that defines the intersection between high fashion and smart technology.

“In early 2014 I could see that wearables were set to guide the future of the fashion industry and that a gap existed within the luxury market,” said Keir Reynolds, CEO & Chairman of MEZZI. “We’re now seeing tech companies trying to get more fashionable but not much has changed with fashion houses. This was a fantastic opportunity to merge smart technology and high fashion to create smart luxury.”

Each MEZZI product has an integrated Bluetooth beacon, allowing wireless connectivity between your bag and smartphone, plus further functionality that can be levered through the MEZZI application. The first technology they launched was a unique crowd-sourced GPS tracker, which ensures peace of mind against loss and theft. This smart technology allows you to track your bag from your smart phone – at any time – if you’ve misplaced it.

MEZZI is designed in Vancouver by fashion heavyweight, Raif Adelberg. Formerly a designer for Vancouver-based, Herschel Supply Co., Adelberg was ranked as one of the top three up-and-coming designers in the world by GQ. When Adelberg was approached to design the line, he liked the idea of mixing luxury with technology. He saw a gap between the two and had a vision for how they could come together.

The luxury line features both women’s and men’s accessories, ranging from travel duffels and totes to business savvy portfolios and briefcases to statement making handbags, all handmade from Italian leathers. Each bag features protective, suede-lined pockets specifically tailored for tablets, laptops and smart phones. Designed with both fashion and function in mind, these bags are made just us much for the trendsetter that requires functionality as they are the tech-savvy early adopter.

“Smart means not having to sacrifice fashion for function,” said Reynolds. With this purpose front of mind, MEZZI is armed to take the luxury wearables market by storm.

Ahead, peep some of their latest handbags and pouches – all available at and locally at Boboli – and get ready to trade in your current carryall for something way smarter.
