My twitter feed has been blowing up this morning with news that Canucks forward Manny Malhotra has been placed on the long term injured reserve and is done for the remainder of the season. News is coming in slow, and there is a press conference/more details coming from the Canucks later today.
Early speculation is that this is related to the scary eye injury Malhotra suffered two seasons ago. If you asked me, Manny has not been the same player since. It is never good to see a player have to hang up the skates early due to injury. We can all only hope this is not a career ending situation for Manny.
“The long term health of Manny Malhotra is of utmost importance to our organization,” said Michael D. Gillis, President and General Manager, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. “Throughout his career Manny has showcased his indispensability through skilled play, being a consummate professional and leader in the room while also continuously giving back to the community. Manny will continue to be a valued member of our organization.”
Also, it was stated that the team has asked Manny to stay within the organization. The role has not yet been defined.
This decision has been in place since the end of last season. Gillis wanted to give Manny the off-season to train and 10 games to see if he could perform. Ultimately, personal safety was the deciding factor.
