Vancouver Police have arrested a man after he threw a smoke grenade into the lobby of the police department’s headquarters.

The incident occurred Saturday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m at the station located on Cambie Street and West 2nd Avenue.

The 28-year-old man was apprehended quickly and there were no injuries, but it prompted an evacuation of the building and caused minor damage.

The Hazmat team was deployed to the station and has cleared it for human occupation.

Charges of mischief, assaulting a police officer, and administering a noxious substance will be laid on the man, who is known to police.

The department operates from two main stations in the city. The Cambie Street station deals with mainly administrative functions while the much larger Graveley Street station in East Vancouver, the former VANOC headquarters, tackles crime and homicides.
