Thomas Luke McConnell, 37, is in custody after he allegedly tried to remove a gun from the holster of a VPD officer.

On the afternoon of December 13, police received several 9-1-1 calls about a man acting out near the intersection of Grandview Highway and Commerical Drive. According to witnesses, the man was pushing pedestrians. He had also shoved an elderly woman who fell to the ground.

Two VPD officers arrived on the scene and approached the suspect, who did not cooperate with authorities.

“The suspect provided a false name and became belligerent as police tried to speak with him,” the VPD said in a release.

“When officers told the man he was under arrest and asked him to place his hands behind his back, he reportedly grabbed hold of one of the police officer’s guns and began to try and pull it from the holster.”

Officers restrained McConnell but he continued to resist and hold the gun. A nearby North Vancouver officer who was on an unrelated call rushed over to try and control the suspect. The officers were eventually able to get McConnell’s hand off the firearm and he remains in custody.
