Mahony & Sons is expanding its presence with a new restaurant location that not only offers the brand’s unique Irish restaurant experience but also some of the most stunning views of the city.

The family-owned chain will open its third restaurant location at Stamps Landing on the False Creek South waterfront. It occupies the entire two-storey building perched over the seawall that once housed Monk McQueen’s.

The building was acquired early last year and its interior has since been completely gutted and rebuilt to resemble age-old taverns in Ireland. There is a wide use of mahogany, hand-carved wood, Celtic designs, and Irish artwork.

Millwork in the styles of both light Gaelic and dark Victorian were imported from Ireland while the walls are dressed with ‘bric a brac’ to provide the interior with a rustic atmosphere.

A Dublin-based company was contracted to design much of the restaurant’s interior, components such as the massive centre bar area, floor tiling, and paintwork. The finishings were shipped to Canada and assembled by local tradespeople.

The exterior of the restaurant is just as impressive with huge patios taking full advantage of the location’s panoramic views of False Creek and the downtown skyline. There are four waterfront patios with a combined seating capacity of 300, including one extensive patio featuring a double-sided fireplace.

There are another 300 seats inside the restaurant, which is 10,000 square feet in size, for a total of 600 seats. If patio and restaurant seating is not what you are looking for, there are also bar areas and an oyster bar.

Mahony & Sons’ False Creek South location serves many of the same wine, beer, spirits and casual comfort food that is offered at its two other locations at the University of British Columbia and the West Building of the Vancouver Convention Centre.

“Many Irish pubs focus on the drinks, but we invest a lot of time and effort into great food as well,” says Head Chef Paul Nguyen. “We offer a selection of traditional Irish dishes such as our braised lamb shank Irish stew, but we also have a great mix of other cuisine including Asian fusion and classic English. This mix is very Vancouver, as there are so many different ethnicities and tastes in this city.”

The restaurant opens on Monday, August 18 at 11 a.m. There is valet parking and the restaurant is also accessible directly from the seawall and AquaBus.
