On Saturday, March 22, two Whistler residents became engaged following a heartwarming, yet highly nostalgic, Lion King-themed flashmob marriage proposal at Whistler Village Square.
Through a spectacular display of orchestration and love, Jared Lekkas proposed to his longtime girlfriend Sofie Obermüller. Lekkas organized the flash mob, film crew, and a string of good hearted lies to keep it all a secret from his soon-to-be-wife.
Like most news in Whistler, word got around. Somehow it seemed that everyone knew about the flash mob and hundreds turned out to spectate. Luckily though word of the mob had not caught Sofie’s ear and the whole thing was a thoughtful, romantic and memorable surprise.
The performance began with the iconic opening to “The Circle of Life,” followed by Imagine Dragons’ “On Top of the World” and Krista Siegfrieds’ “Marry Me Baby.”
During the “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” finale, Lekkas emerged out of the mob of dancers wearing a lion suit costume and then walked towards an unsuspecting Obermüller. He took off his lions’ mane hood, gave Obermüller a hug, and went down on a knee to propose to her with a ring.
For Lekkas, this was a mission accomplished: she said yes.
