Bucha’ didn’t know that a handful of British Columbians make one of the world’s most popular health drinks, kombucha, right here in our backyard.

If you already knew, chances are you’ve been sipping on this nutrient-rich beverage packed full of antioxidants for some time, which is great considering there are some terrific health benefits that come from consuming local and organic ingredients in this form.

This fermented beverage is produced by combining ingredients using a symbiotic colony of yeast and bacteria. The light and effervescent beverage is said to cause positive digestive and mental effects for its drinker, so it’s no wonder bottles of this stuff is flying off the shelves.

Here are five kombucha teas made in or around Vancouver, along with where you can find most of their brews.

Tip: kombucha is also a great mixer for cocktails, and most producers mention this somewhere on their websites and/or bottles.

1. Moonbrew Tonic Co.

Moonbrew Tonic makes jun – a fermented beverage made from green tea and honey (instead of the traditional black tea and refined sugar). Jun has been called the “champagne of kombucha” and Moonbrew makes it in four flavours: Genuine (original), Intuition (raspberry, sage, rose), Essence (reishi, apple, chai), and Spirit (blueberry, lavender, mint made magical by E3Live). Moonbrew does not have a storefront, but you can find its brews at many different stores, restaurants, cafes, and markets around Vancouver.
