New year, new travel destinations.
And travel website Kayak has revealed the hottest Canadian trends heading into 2018. Nine out of the top 10 trending destinations are outside of Canada.
This year, all eyes are on sunny and exotic destination. Cartagena, Colombia topped the trending list with a 58% increase in travel searches year over year. Colombia is not a new trend for Canadians, although Cartagena is. Last year, Bogota took the #10 spot. But increased flight routes, record low crime rates and a booming economy are making Cartagena a must-see for savvy jetsetters.
Destinations like Phuket, Osaka, Bali and the Maldives also topped this year’s list of trending destinations for Canadians proving trip length and duration are not necessarily a factor when booking a trip, which is generally the case when heading that far.
“Flying within Canada can cost travelers a small fortune. Perhaps because of this, we see less Canadians travel domestically, looking instead to destinations where they can maximize their time off while getting the best bang for their buck,” said David Solomito, VP NA brand marketing, KAYAK. “The Maldives, for example, is a destination Canadians should keep on their radar for 2018. Not only did it take the #6 spot on this year’s top trending list, but flight prices are down 31% for the first half of 2018 making it easier and more affordable to explore than previous years.”
