The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide: Jethro's Fine Grub

Jun 2 2016, 3:00 am

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re tucking into the some enormous brunch-inspired eats at Jethro’s Fine Grub.

You don’t have to wait until the weekend to enjoy a hearty brunch feed at Jethro’s Fine Grub. This casual diner-esque eatery serves up a range of essential breakfast and lunch items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

With two locations in Vancouver, one on Dunbar (the original), and the other on Fraser, near 18th Street, diners can take their pick in regards to which branch to frequent. No matter which locale is visited diners are assured some truly plentiful and satisfying fare.

Offering the same menu, both locations dish up a range of sweet and savory plates. You know you’re in for one hell of a meal when the menu asks patrons to “please eat responsibly.”

Those with a sweet tooth will have a difficult time deciding between Jethro’s Chocolate Chip Banana Bread French Toast ($12), Apple Cobbler French Toast ($12), Nutella French Toast ($13), Buttermilk Pancakes served with whipped butter and warm maple syrup ($5 – $10), and more equally tempting options.

If pancakes are your thing or you love a food challenge, why not treat yourself to a serve of Grandma’s Pancakes ($13). With cinnamon apples baked into the buttermilk batter and a topping of streusel and whipped butter, Grandma’s pancakes (which come in a low stack of two) are at times bigger than the plate they’re brought out on.

This mammoth dish could easily be shared between three or more people (or a small country) depending on your hunger levels. If you are not able to stomach another mouthful, the servers will kindly put the remaining pancake into a to-go box.

Searching for more savoury bites never fear, Jethro’s also whips up two eggs served any style with hashbrowns and toast ($7), Corned Beef Hash ($10), Chicken Fried Steak ($14), Crab Cake Benedict ($13), and a Breakfast Burrito ($8).

If you’re looking for a recommendation from one of the servers, they will no doubt tell you that the Cowboy’s Breakfast ($13) is by far the most popular dish on the savoury menu. Featuring three eggs any style, smoked bacon, sausage, grilled chorizo, corn cakes, and chili smothered hash browns, it’s no wonder that this sizable meal is such a favoured choice.

With such unique and generous offerings, it’s not surprising to discover that Jethro’s has gained quite a large following. So large in fact that between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the weekend diners may find themselves with a 45 minute wait for a table. A totally worthy wait, it must be noted.

Reasonably priced grub, huge quantities, flavourful dishes, and a casual vibe make Jethro’s an excellent mid-week and weekend spot to grab some brunch. If you do decide to drop by, be sure to brace yourselves and turn up hungry!
