IKEA Canada recalls pet water dispenser after dogs suffocate

IKEA Canada is immediately recalling the LURVIG water dispenser for pets.

According to the furniture company, the recall is due to the risk of dogs and cats “getting their heads stuck in the dome of the water dispenser with possible suffocation as consequence.”

Globally, IKEA has received reports of two incidents where dogs have died as a result of this problem.

The LURVIG water dispenser was sold in Canada from October 2017 to July 2018 and 7,767 units have been sold nationally. At this time, there have been no reported incidents in Canada.

IKEA Canada urges customers to stop using the water dispenser and return it to any IKEA store for a full refund.

“At IKEA, the safety and security of our products is our top priority, which is why we have decided to recall the LURVIG water dispenser,” said Petra Axdorff, Business Area Manager at IKEA of Sweden AB. “We are deeply saddened by these events and know that pets are important and loved family members for many of our customers.”

Customers should return their LURVIG water dispenser at the Returns & Exchange department at any IKEA store or call IKEA Customer Service toll-free, 1-800-661-9807 for a full refund.

Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required by IKEA for this recall.
